Pop-up libraries make reading exciting
Posted: 21st January 2020Excited children are seeing unique libraries popping up all around their school.
Freshwaters Primary Academy is to undergo an expansion project this year to provide a new block containing a library.
Before the work is completed in the autumn, the school is looking at ways to ensure pupils are exposed to as many reading opportunities as possible in the meantime.
Headteacher Jackie Diggle is creating mobile libraries which can pop up where children least expect it.
She said: “We have had a writing focus this year; children know the expectations we have and their writing has improved as a result. I get children coming to see me daily with all this amazing writing. There’s a real sense of pride around writing now.
“But, we do not want to forget reading in among that. We are looking at reading being a real focus as we head towards World Book Day in March.”
The pop-up libraries – which will take on themes from the Arctic to the jungle - could be spotted in unusual places, such as the school field or staff room, to create a buzz around books.
Mrs Diggle said: “As much as our pupils do visit the local library with their teachers, we are keen to have our own pop-up libraries in school while we wait for our new library to be built. Our classrooms each have library corners, but that is not enough.
“Children who read regularly will be rewarded with a trip to our pop-up libraries. It will create real excitement. Making reading more interesting is the key.”
The school – where children spend the last 15 minutes of the day reading - is also seeking help in kitting out the library, with the PTA working on fundraising activities in support of the project.
