PE apprentices welcome Robert Halfon MP visit

Posted: 2nd November 2017

Future PE teachers demonstrated the work they are doing in Harlow primary schools.

The Burnt Mill Academy Trust (BMAT) is working with Sporting Futures to train PE apprentices within its primary schools.

The apprentices work with PE co-ordinators to run specialist sport sessions for pupils.

The work they are doing was demonstrated to Harlow MP Robert Halfon when he visited Freshwaters Primary Academy.

He observed as apprentices Jordan Newborough – former Burnt Mill Academy student working with Freshwaters - and Katy Mckenzie-Howard, from Roydon Primary School, worked with Year 5.

Phil Dawes, director of PE and sport for BMAT, said: “We are collaborating with Sporting Futures for the first time this year to give career pathways in sport.

“We have taken on three PE apprentices this year for our primary schools to support PE co-ordinators in running sport events. As the year progresses, the apprentices will be able to run their own sessions with the hope of going on to become PE co-ordinators or teachers themselves in future.

“It’s great for BMAT students to see former students going on to follow career pathways in this way.”

Teresa Avey, head of school at Freshwaters, said: “Children were given the opportunity to show our visitors how much they enjoy taking part in the sporting activities that Jordan provides them.

“The children also gave an insight into how Jordan helps them by discussing how he models and demonstrates the skills he wants them to learn.”

Apprentices are completing one-year level 3 apprenticeships with BMAT and Sporting Futures, which provides opportunities for young people to achieve their dreams and ambitions.
