Decorated walls inspire children
Posted: 25th February 2015Every last inch of a Harlow primary school is proving an inspiration to children.
Freshwaters Primary Academy, in School Lane, is being transformed with each surface having colour, positivity and aspirations added to them.
The corridors of the school have already been given a makeover, with five large cupboards having their doors covered in bright photos.
Marios Solomonides, head of school, said: “We are trying to make the very best of all space available to us. The cupboard doors feature images from different areas of the curriculum, including a professional swimmer, the natural water cycle, the Houses of Parliament to represent British values, an Ancient Greek temple and famous artwork.
“It is all very aspirational and we want our children to recognise these scenes and messages.
“We are also having mirrors added to the walls around our corridors as research shows children slow down if there are mirrors. We hope this will encourage our small children to take their time when moving around school, rather than rushing or running.”
The next project is using the floors throughout the corridors as another way of inspiring children, with the yellow brick road from the Wizard of Oz being considered, along with different textured floorings to assist in science work.
